FAQ

About Adapted Accessibility

What is the impact switch?

The impact switch is an accessibility switch designed to provide a simple, reliable way to activate compatible switch-enabled devices. When pressed, it sends an on/off signal to the connected device, allowing a user to interact with supported toys, communication devices, computers, environmental controls, and other switch-accessible equipment.

Who is the switch designed for?

The impact switch was designed for individuals who benefit from an alternative way to access and control compatible devices. It may be useful for people with disabilities, limited mobility, reduced fine-motor control, or other access needs that make conventional buttons, controls, or touchscreens difficult to use.

Because every person’s needs and devices are different, we recommend confirming compatibility and consulting an occupational therapist, assistive technology professional, educator, caregiver, or other qualified support professional when appropriate.

What is Adapted Accessibility?

Adapted Accessibility creates practical accessibility products intended to support more independent, inclusive interaction with compatible devices. Our focus is on straightforward, dependable access solutions, including the impact switch, for home, school, therapeutic, and professional environments.

Our goal is to make switch access more approachable by offering products that are easy to understand, simple to connect, and suited to a wide range of compatible assistive and adapted devices.

Products and Compatibility

What devices can the impact switch control?

The impact switch is designed for use with devices that accept a standard 3.5 mm switch input. Depending on the device and its setup, this may include switch-adapted toys, augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) devices, communication aids, computer-access interfaces, environmental-control systems, universal accessibility controllers, and other assistive technology equipment.

Compatibility ultimately depends on the receiving device. A 3.5 mm connector alone does not guarantee compatibility, because devices can use different wiring, activation methods, or power requirements. Before ordering, confirm that the device is designed to accept a standard external accessibility switch. Standard 3.5 mm connectors are commonly used for assistive switches, which generally act as a simple on/off input when activated.

What type of connection does the switch use?

The impact switch uses a 3.5 mm switch connection for compatible devices with a corresponding 3.5 mm external switch input.

This is commonly referred to as a 1/8-inch switch connection. It is not intended for use as an audio headphone connection. The connected device must be designed to recognize a switch activation signal through its 3.5 mm input. Many assistive-technology switches use this format, but customers should verify the specific requirements of their device before purchase.

Can I use more than one switch?

Yes, if the device, controller, or access system supports multiple external switch inputs. Multiple-switch setups can be used for functions such as selection, navigation, scanning, left/right movement, or different programmed actions.

The Impact Switch is a single-switch input device. The number of switches you can use and the actions they control are determined by the connected device or accessibility interface.

Support and Troubleshooting

My impact switch is not activating my device. What should I check?

First, confirm that the device is designed to accept an external accessibility switch through a compatible 3.5 mm switch input. Make sure the plug is fully inserted and that the device is powered on, charged, or has fresh batteries if required.

If the device has settings for switch access, external input, scanning, or button assignments, check that those settings are enabled and configured correctly. If the issue continues, contact us with the make and model of the device you are trying to control, along with a short description or video of the issue.

The switch works sometimes but not every time. What should I do?

Check that the cable and plug are not loose, bent, damaged, or under tension. Disconnect and reconnect the switch, then test it again with the plug fully seated in the device’s switch-input port.

Also confirm that the receiving device is not in a mode that changes how it responds to switch input. Some devices require specific accessibility, scanning, timing, or activation settings. If the issue persists, contact us within 30 days of delivery so we can help evaluate the problem.

Can I use the impact switch with a phone, tablet, or computer?

The impact switch does not connect directly to every phone, tablet, or computer. It can be used with compatible accessibility interfaces, adaptive controllers, or switch-access systems that accept a standard 3.5 mm external switch input.

For example, a user may connect the impact switch to a compatible controller or interface that is then configured to control a computer, tablet, communication app, game, or other supported system. Confirm the requirements of the controller, interface, or software before ordering.

What should I do if my switch is damaged or defective?

Please contact Adapted Accessibility within 30 days of delivery. Include your order number, the email address used for the order, a description of the issue, and photos or video when possible.

If a product defect is confirmed within the 30-day defect period, we will review the matter and work with you on an appropriate resolution.
