Tax-Exempt Information
Required Before Ordering
If you believe your organization qualifies for tax-exempt purchasing:
- Create or use your Shopify customer account.
- Contact Adapted Accessibility before placing your order.
- Provide your organization’s legal name, billing address, shipping address, and contact information.
- Submit the applicable state sales-tax exemption certificate or other required documentation.
- Wait for Adapted Accessibility to review and approve the request.
- Confirm that tax-exempt status has been assigned to your Shopify customer account.
- Place your order using the same email address associated with the approved Shopify customer account.
Do not place your order until your tax-exempt status has been approved and assigned to your account.
Shopify states that customer tax exemptions apply at checkout only when the customer uses the same email address associated with the tax-exempt customer account.
After Approval
Once your documentation has been reviewed and approved, Adapted Accessibility will update the applicable tax settings on your Shopify customer account. When you sign in and check out using that account, applicable sales tax should be excluded according to the approved exemption settings.
Customer tax exemptions take priority over product or shipping tax overrides in Shopify
If tax still appears at checkout, do not complete the order. Contact Adapted Accessibility so the account and exemption details can be reviewed.
Important Conditions
- Tax exemptions are generally based on state and local rules, not solely on federal nonprofit status.
- An IRS determination letter or 501(c)(3) status may not, by itself, establish exemption from sales tax in every state.
- A valid state-specific exemption certificate may be required.
- The organization name and address on the documentation should match the Shopify customer account and billing information.
- The purchase may need to be made by the exempt organization and used for an eligible purpose.
- Tax-exempt treatment may not apply to every product, service, shipping charge, or transaction.
- Exemption certificates may expire or require renewal.
The IRS recognizes various types of tax-exempt organizations, but sales-tax treatment is determined under applicable state and local rules.
